Il Feltro Stamperia in Rome

Since 2002 Gullvåg has also used Il Feltro Stamperia in Rome, and worked with Carla and Piero Cesaroni. Here Gullvåg became interested in metal graphics with copper plates, and has explored the techniques of black and white and colour etching. He prints at this workshop at least once a year, preferably two.

When etching, the artist works with sharp tools on metal plates covered with an etching-ground. Once the motif has been drawn on the plate it is laid in an acid bath. The motif is etched into the plate, exactly where the artist has exposed the metal with his sharp drawing instrument. Thereafter the etching ground is removed. The entire plate is inked, after which excess colour is wiped away, such that colour only remains in the lower recesses created by the etching process. Paper is laid atop the plate and passed through the press under pressure. The paper, thick and porous, must be damp before printing in order for the colour to transfer well. As the metal plate and paper are passed through the press, the coloured ink is transferred from the metal plate’s indentations onto the paper. The metal plate must be re-inked and the excess wiped off each time it is printed.

One can easily recognize a metal plate print due to its relief-like character, particularly in the raised edge created by the impression of the metal plate itself.
