London

During his year in London (1983-84) Gullvåg’s interest in portraits intensified – not least through his frequent visits to the National Portrait Gallery, where, e.g., portraits by English painters such as Gainsborough and Reynolds made a strong impression. Furthermore, Rembrandt’s portraits in the National Gallery moved him deeply.

While in London, Gullvåg completed his first large pictorial cycle The National Portraits, consisting of free paraphrases over a number of portraits in the National Portrait Gallery. A characteristic painting from this cycle is King and Cow, triptych (1984).
